ECOTOURISM HOTEL AND RECREATION AREA
ADOM FALLS, AKUAPEM NORTH, GHANA
A PROJECT DEVELOPED BY VISTIS INTERNATIONAL GHANA

ADOM FALLS EXPERIENCE

VISTIS INTERNATIONAL GHANA has acquired 200 acres of land near the town of Tutu in the Akuapem North District of the Eastern Region of Ghana for development into master planned residential communities. Out of the 200 acres, an area of 50 acres (20 hectares) has been set aside for the implementation of an ecotourism project. The 50 acre ecotourism site is adjacent to the Highland Park development which is the first phase of the residential development.

The ecotourism site follows the natural year-round stream that flows through a forested canyon and is the source for three 100 foot waterfalls which are within the property. The canyon, with its lush tropical vegetation, and the stream, with its year-round waterfalls, provide a unique ecosystem that we are developing into a recreation area and hotel project. The site is made even more unique by the fact that it is only minutes away from the commercial hub of Accra. The project will provide both day trekkers and overnight guests an opportunity to experience the enhanced natural landscape as well as provide resources for the preservation of the unique ecosystem.

PLACES YOU MUST GO

RECREATION & ECOTOURISM

Adom Falls Recreation and Ecotourism Area (AFREA): The AFREA will build upon the primitive tourist facilities that currently exist at the lower Adom Falls. The falls have been a destination for “adventure” mountain bike excursions and a spot for the local youth to jam on holidays but have fallen into poor condition. The AFRA is accessed from a public road/ path from the town of Obosmase which is on the N4 road and is approximately 5 minute drive from Aburi. It is a 45 minute drive from the Tetteh Quarshie intersection in Accra. The road becomes impassable for vehicles and turns into a rocky footpath for the last 0.50 km.

The project will be to improve the road from Obosomase down to a new car park that will be constructed near the falls area. There will be a few new permeant structures built to accommodate the food and beverage services, rest rooms and to provide shaded sitting areas. Hardscaping and landscaping will be introduced into the natural terrain. We anticipate facilities to accommodate 200 people. We will use solar powered lighting and a bore hole for water. An improved walking trail, or riverwalk, will be constructed along the stream linking the lower waterfalls to the upper waterfall. The riverwalk path will be landscaped into a nature walk/ natural botanical garden.

Natural pools will be enlarged into safe swimming spots along the stream. Advanced trails will climb the canyon walls for the adventurous hikers. The topography of the site lends itself to a zip line course and this will be investigated. The concept is to provide a family friendly day trip spot for the people of Accra as well as a spot for visiting tourists to get outdoors into the forested mountains and get some exercise, take a swim and have some simple food and drink and relax from the stress of the city which, while it is only over the next ridge, seems to be far away.

Another part of the project is to provide a sit down restaurant that will overhang 100 feet above the Adom Falls and have panoramic views of the mountains and Accra city lights in the distance. The restaurant will be accessed by a private road from the resort hotel and will be a destination for the less adventurous. The restaurant will have an African theme and serve good quality reasonably priced local dishes and daily specials. It will feature both indoor seating as well as dining on the cantilevered deck overlooking the falls below. There will be a garden bar for those that just want to have a drink and sit under a shade tree. Access to the falls will be by way of a rail car/ tram that will transport patrons down to the top of the waterfalls and back up again. The restaurant will have a gift shop with local artisans handicrafts for sale.

RESORT HOTEL SPA

Adom Hills Resort Hotel Spa and Convention Center:  Sitting on the ridge 300 vertical feet above the Adom Falls and 1,200 feet above the city of Accra will be the resort hotel.  The hotel is to fill the trend for hotels with resort like amenities and meeting rooms that are located outside of Accra.  These types of facilities have proved popular with the weekenders and for corporations and MDA’s that want to have meetings, retreats and conferences.  The goal will be to build a first class hotel connected to the truly unique Adom Falls ecotourism area to create a must see destination for locals and tourist alike.

The hotel concept has the following points:

  • Family friendly resort style hotel
  • Experienced international operator with marketing linkages
  • Main hotel building – 2 to 3 stories with reception, dining meeting rooms, guest rooms
  • Individual single and double room chalets with sitting deck and plunge pool
  • Resort style family pool
  • Organic health spa and wellness center with adult lap pool
  • Game room for young adults
  • Restaurants to include fine dining, casual and poolside terrace bar
  • Meeting rooms for conferences / special events
    • Main room for up to 200 people
    • Breakout rooms for 20 – 40 people
  • Back of House to cater for restaurants and conferences
  • Assume 60 – 70 rooms in main building with 10-12 chalets
  • Provide for a second phase with a further 20 - 30 rooms
  • Room count and mix to be advised by hospitality consultant/ operators
